What is INTERNET ?

It was born 40 years ago, in a lab at the University of California, Los Angeles. Today it wraps the entire planet and features in the daily routine of more than 1.5 billion people.

Who controls the internet?
Ans:- The official answer is no one, but it is a half-truth that few swallow

Could the net become self-aware?
In engineering terms, it is easy to see similarities between the human brain and the internet's complex network of nodes, so could conciousness be the next step?

How big is the net?
In 2008, Google announced that its systems had registered a trillion unique pages – but even this might represent a fraction of what is out there

Is there only one internet?
The internet is a disparate mix of interconnected computers, many of them on large networks run by universities, businesses and so on – so what unites them, if anything?

Is the net caught in the credit crunch?
Real-estate prices crashing, a big drop in growth, the threat of infrastructure collapse, and authorities printing more money to stave off disaster – that's just the virtual world

Where are the net's dark corners?
There are plenty of places online that you would do well to steer clear of: some could leave your computer infected with worms or viruses – then there are the "black holes"

Is the net hurting the environment?
Sending an email across the Atlantic Ocean does not burn any jet fuel, but the internet is not without its own, huge carbon footprint

Could we shut the net down?
When even the biggest cyber-attacks have failed to bring down the web, governments might not fare much better

IRCTC finally launches its ticketing app for Android

It took a long time coming and the official IRCTC Android app is finally available for download on Google Play.

Unlike most other popular service providers, IRCTC bypassed the more popular Android and iOS platforms and instead launched its mobile apps first for Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 devices. IRCTC also has an app for Windows 8.

The IRCTC Android app is called IRCTC Connect and is a 12MB download from Google Play. Released on October 9, the app has received an average rating of 4.3/5 from users.

The app allows users to login to their IRCTC accounts and search, book, view and cancel Indian Railways train tickets. The app can also alert users about upcoming journeys.

According to IRCTC the app can also be used to book tatkal tickets.

The IRCTC Connect app is compatible with Android version 4.1 and above

Microsoft Windows 10 Technical Preview

Two weeks after unveiling its Windows 10 operating system and releasing the Technical Preview to the world, Microsoft on Monday announced that it has hit 1 million registrations for the Windows Insider Program over the weekend.

Redmond-based tech giant's Joe Belfiore further stated that "Over 200,000 pieces of user-initiated feedback have been submitted to us via the Windows Feedback app from Windows Insiders like you [registrants]."

Breaking down the statistics further, Belfiore on the company blog post mentioned that 36 percent of the Windows 10 Technical Preview users installed the OS on virtual machines, while the remaining 64 percent installed it on actual PCs. This further indicates that most of the feedbacks were based on 'medium-term' use and not just 'few minutes of experimentation'.

Talking about developers, Belfiore stated that 68 percent of the Windows 10 Technical Preview users launched more than 7 apps per day, while 25 percent launched more than 26 apps per day, and 5 percent of the devices launched 68 apps per day.

The blog post further encouraged Windows 10 Technical Preview registrants and non-registrants to send their feedbacks to "further impact product decisions". Check out our detailed guide on how to download and install Windows 10 Technical Preview.

The new software represents an attempt to step back from the radical redesign that alienated many PC users when Windows 8 was introduced two years ago. But it's not a complete retreat from Microsoft's goal of bridging the gap between PCs and mobile devices: It still has touch-screen functions and strives to create a familiar experience for Windows users who switch between desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.

World Cup final:Germany beat Argentina 1-0

Germany won the World Cup final for a fourth time after Mario Gotze's extra-time volley sealed a 1-0 win over Argentina.

Argentina were preparing for a penalty shoot-out in the Maracana, but in the 113th minute Gotze chested down Andre Schurrle's superb cross and volleyed home to cap an historic victory for the jubilant Germans.

Mario Gotze: Celebrates his extra-time winner
It will take a while for Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Rodrigo Palacio to forget this defeat.

They were all guilty of missing good chances to give Argentina what would have been a glorious win in the home of their fiercest rivals Brazil.

Tens of thousands of Argentinians had flooded Rio hoping to see Messi inspire his team to their third World Cup win.

This was Messi's chance to put himself on a par with his idol Diego Maradona.

But unlike in 1986, when Maradona captained Argentina to victory against the Germans, this was the Mannschaft's night.

Lionel Messi: Went on a few magical runs for Argentina
And there would be few who would argue they did not deserve it.

Ever since they swept Portugal aside 4-0 in their opening match, Germany have looked destined to lift the famous trophy inside this famous stadium.

Blessed with talent from one to 23, they are a brutal attacking unit also capable of keeping things tight at the back.

The 7-1 destruction of Brazil in the previous round proved as much.

And in Joachim Low they have a coach who has answered his critics by becoming the first man to lead a European team to World Cup glory in South America.

Mesut Ozil: Struggled to find a way through the Argentine defence
It did not take for this game to live up to its pre-match billing as the ball flew from one end to another amid a backdrop of raucous noise, particularly from the Argentinians.

Sami Khedira was injured in the warm-up and replaced by Christoph Kramer in the starting XI.

When the game kicked off, Higuain shot wide from a tight angle early on and Messi used his trickery to prise open the Germany defence, but Bastian Schweinsteiger put in a block.

Miroslav Klose came agonisingly close to heading home Philipp Lahm's cross at the other end.

Geraint Hughes brings us the latest from Brazil as Germany win the World Cup for the fourth time.
Higuain then missed a glorious chance. Toni Kroos headed the ball over his own back four towards Higuain, who watched the ball drop perfectly on to his right foot.

Despite being two yards ahead of the chasing Mats Hummels, the Napoli striker dragged his shot wide of the upright. Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella was stunned. Substitute Sergio Aguero was so embarrassed for his team-mate that he pulled his training top over his head.

Higuain thought he had made amends when he tucked away Ezequiel Lavezzi's cross, but he was offside - and then Kramer, who had taken a knock to the head earlier, hobbled off and was replaced by Schurrle.

Gonzalo Higuain: Sidefooted past Neuer but saw offside flag go up
The first half came to a dramatic conclusion.

Messi squeezed the ball past Neuer, but Jerome Boateng cleared off the line before Benedikt Howedes hit the upright with a close-range header from Kroos' corner.

Less than 90 seconds after the restart Messi found a way through the Germany defence, but he dragged his shot a foot wide when he should have scored.

Neuer had to revert to the sweeper role he performed against Algeria as he came right to the edge of his box to punch a long ball by Zabaleta, taking Higuain in the process with his knee.

Benedikt Howedes: Steered a close-range header against the upright
A dazed Higuain, holding his head, demanded a penalty, but the referee waved play on.

Mesut Ozil and Schurrle lost control of the ball in the box with the goal gaping and as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, both teams started to take fewer risks.

Even a moment of magic from Messi was foiled by Neuer, who came racing off his line to smother the ball after the Argentina captain has skipped past four defenders.

With nine minutes left Kroos placed a low shot wide after some fine set-up play by Mesut Ozil, much to the annoyance of Low.

Klose's record-breaking World Cup career ended when he was substituted for Gotze in the 88th minute.

Miroslav Klose: Made way for Gotze with minutes remaining
Gotze sent a weak shot into Sergio Romero's arms and the game then petered out until the referee blew to signal the end of 90 minutes.

Sabella tried to fire his men up with a motivational team-talk just before extra-time but it was Germany who came out stronger.

Argentina were almost a goal down when Muller returned Schurrle's pass and he fired a strong half-volleyed drive which Romero did well to parry.

Argentina had their big chance moments later when Hummels failed to clear a routine cross. The ball fell for Palacio, but his lob went over Neuer but wide of the upright.

Aguero drew blood from under Schweinsteiger's right eye as they jumped for the ball.

Mario Gotze: Volleys home the winning goal
Then the killer moment came that won the Germans the World Cup.

Unlike many of his team-mates, Schurrle still had plenty of energy left in the tank. He raced down the left past three Argentinians and crossed for Gotze, who cushioned the ball on his chest before sweeping a volley past Romero from close range.

It was a wonderful strike worthy of winning any tournament. The Argentinians inside the Maracana fell silent. Their party had been gate-crashed.

Indian-born American Engineer ,satya nadella Microsoft CEO

As Satya Nadella becomes the third CEO of Microsoft, he brings a relentless drive for innovation and a spirit of collaboration to his new role. He joined Microsoft 22 years ago.
Satya Nadella was born in Hyderabad, India, in a Telugu-speaking family from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. His father was a civil servant in the Indian Administrative Service, Nadella attended the Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet before attaining a bachelor of engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications from the Manipal Institute of Technology in 1987 (then affiliated to Mangalore University), Manipal, Karnataka.

Nadella subsequently traveled to the US on a student visa to study for an MS degree in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, receiving his degree in 1990.Later he received an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

What about 4G in india ?

Reliance Jio Infocomm is expected to use between 30,000 and 45,000 mobile towers when it starts offering 4G services in the third or fourth quarter of this financial year, according to Credit Suisse.
"Our recent channel checks suggest that RJio has completed about 11,000 base station installations nationwide and is possibly targeting 30,000-45,000 base stations by launch. We expect this target to be met by December 2014 or March 2015," Credit Suisse analysts Sunil Tirumalai and Chunky Shah said in a recent report.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has said it would use the mix of airwaves it owns to offer both high-speed data and voice services while scoffing at analyst comments that the company could find it tough to attract customers without providing voice options. The company is building "futuristic high-capacity infrastructure to handle huge demand for data and voice" using fourth-generation technology, a Reliance Jio spokesman said.
"In addition to highspeed data, the 4G network will provide voice services," he said. According to some analysts, since the company owns spectrum in the 2300MHz and 1800MHz bands — which are non-standard and more suitable to carry data — its cost to roll out services will go up by 35-40%, limiting the ability to offer low-cost voice services that account for 80% the industry's revenue.
The situation could get grim if Reliance Jio is driven to sell customised phones amid weak mass market availability of devices that work on 4G technologies, analysts at HSBC said in a report. But, Reliance Jio said rapid strides in global 4G technologies have made these devices more affordable.
Also, Wi-Fi enabled second- and third-generation devices can access Reliance Jio's services through an affordable pocket router, the spokesman said in an email, responding to queries from ET.

What Happens to Your Social Media Profiles When You Die?

One of life's most perplexing existential questions gets a lot more complicated when you factor in social media.

While there's no definitive answer to what happens to us when we die, Dan Shaffer at WebpageFX put together a visual guide to social media life after death. While Twitter will start deleting accounts after six months of inactivity, most other social networks won't touch your profile unless specifically asked by a family member or an agent of law enforcement. Whether your account is deleted or deactivated, your data will be interred with your profile, and will typically only be unearthed if needed for a legal investigation

Twitter added a WhatsApp button to its Android app

Twitter has added a new WhatsApp button in its new version of the Android app. The WhatsApp button that appears within in a tweet as a sharing option now lets users easily share tweets with people on WhatsApp.

Earlier users would go to the share button and select the WhatsApp icon from the long list of sharing options to share tweets with people on the messaging app, but the addition of the "Share to WhatsApp" button in tweets itself reduces the number of steps for users while sharing a tweet on WhatsApp.

However, the feature is available to users using the version 5.15.0 of the Twitter mobile app. You can go to the app and tap Settings to check the version of your Twitter mobile app. If you are one of those yet to get the new version, you are suggested to update the app.

Panono

We will be the first to admit that our camera skills are more below par than Martin Parr so that's why we love the Panono. This ball camera allows you to take 360 degree panoramic shots by throwing the thing up in the air. The Panono is clever enough to know what the optimum height to take a picture is so you end up with snaps that are both clear and a whopping 108MP in quality. It's rugged too – made of the same water/life resistant plastic that a GoPro is.

Google Buys New Robots Which Run Faster Than Humans

THEY run faster than people and are agile over rough surfaces and terrains that are challenging for most human beings. Wildcat is the latest mobile robot acquired by Google to join BigDog, Cheetah and Atlas. The internet giant has bought the machines in an acquisition of US company, Boston Dynamics, which has designed mobile research robots for the Pentagon. Boston Dynamics has created machines which walk and stay upright over difficult terrain and run fast like big cats.

Why Google is buying up the machines is unstated, but it’s thought the company may be working on systems to replace warehouse workers or carry out home care.

A video of BigDog shows a noisy, gas-powered, four-legged, walking robot that climbs hills, travels through snow, skitters precariously on ice and even manages to stay upright in response to a well-placed human kick.

The video has been viewed more than 15 million times since it was posted on YouTube in 2008.

NODE.JS ON THE ROAD

Node.js is a software platform for scalable server-side and networking applications. Node.js applications are written in JavaScript. All of the popular server operating systems are supported, including Windows and Linux.
Node.js applications are designed to maximize throughput and efficiency, using non-blocking I/O and asynchronous events. Node.js applications run single-threaded, although Node.js uses multiple threads for file and network events. Node.js is commonly used for real time applications due to its asynchronous nature, allowing applications to display information faster for users without the need for refreshing.
Node.js is a runtime environment combined with libraries for common web application requirements. Internally, it uses the Google V8 JavaScript engine to execute code, and a large percentage of the basic modules are written in JavaScript. Node.js contains a built-in asynchronous I/O library for file, socket and HTTP communication. The HTTP and socket support allows Node.js to act as a web server without additional web server software such as Apache.

Node.js was created by Ryan Dahl starting in 2009. Its development and maintenance is sponsored by Joyent.Dahl was inspired to create Node.js after seeing a file upload progress bar on Flickr. The browser did not know how much of the file had been uploaded and had to query the web server. Dahl wanted an easier way. Ruby's Mongrel web server was another source of inspiration for Dahl.

4 Things Shoppers Want in an Online Retailer's Return Policy

Imagine a customer is shopping online for a new pair of sneakers and stumbles upon what seems to be the perfect pair. After skimming the reviews, he notices comments that the shoes tend to run a little small. That’s when he checks the store’s return policy, which he finds complicated and ambiguous. It could have been written in a different language.
Would he still click that “purchase” button? Probably not.
And he would not be the only one to abandon the shopping cart because of a cumbersome returns process. My company, Endicia, recently surveyed more than 1,000 consumers and found that the majority of folks who have never purchased an item online cite “returns” as the reason for cold feet.
It’s critical to identify what a good return policy offers. Here are the top four things online shoppers want when it comes to returns:
1. Clarity. A positive returns experience starts with clear communication. It’s the only way customers will know what to expect.
Online retailers should make their return policies simple to understand and easy to find on their websites. A good policy outlines what can be returned, whether customers will be granted a full refund or store credit, how long they have to make a return and if return shipping is free. Taking the time to clearly spell out these details will show customers that the business is one they can trust.
2. Convenience. There’s a reason why people gravitate toward online shopping: It’s convenient. They don’t have to deal with crowded malls or long lines. In fact, they can get anything their hearts desire without ever leaving home. The same concept should apply to a returns process.
If it makes sense for the business model, consider simplifying things for customers by including a return label with the purchase. If it would work out better for customers to contact the company for a return, be sure to include the appropriate phone number and instructions on the packing slip. Ensure that there's a way to send shoppers a PDF of the return label, so they can quickly and simply print the label at home.
Federal Express, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service all offer return shipping services. Until recently, however, companies had to prepay the cost when printing return labels with U.S. postal service stamps and request refunding for unused ones. Sellers can now print U.S. Postal Service return labels at no charge unless they are used. (My company offers that service through Endicia software that lets retailers to print U.S. Postal Service labels, with the postage being deducted only if a return label is scanned before entering the mail stream.)
3. Affordability. Forty-nine percent of shoppers list shipping costs as the most exasperating part of returning an online purchase. A customer dissatisfied by a purchase isn't interested in paying for a return. To keep customers happy, eliminate or  minimize the cost of return shipping.
Absorbing the cost of return shipping can be expensive so select the carrier with the best rate. The U.S. postal service provides the lowest cost rate for packages weighing 10 pounds or less, while FedEx and UPS provide competitive rates for heavier items.
4. Flexibility. Nobody wants to deal with the pressure of meeting a tight return deadline. By offering a flexible window of time for returns, a company shows that it values its customers. Thirty days is standard, 60 days is generous and 90 days just might make a company the next great retailer.
Retailers have a responsibility to ensure that every consumer touch point lives up to the promise of the brand’s image. See the infographic below prepared by Endicia about how to not let a customer relationship be spoiled by a poor returns experience.
